Today was the first day of the 2009 legislative session and my first day as Majority Leader of the Colorado State Senate. I’m honored to have the position and serve with all of my talented and dedicated colleagues.
Senate President Peter Groff and Senate Minority Leader Josh Penry delivered insightful and poignant opening remarks that highlighted our solemn charge as elected officials in this time of economic turmoil. When our budget is $604 million dollars short, and 5,000 people are calling for unemployment benefits every single day, we simply must meet the challenge of strengthening the economy and creating jobs.
At this point, it’s anybody’s guess when the economy will bounce back, but until it does, job creation will be our focal point.
After the opening day ceremonies, I had lunch with my family and staff. We were talking about the various economic forecasts we’ve heard, and the man who managed my campaign said, “I heard that the economists gave up their crystal balls and traded them in for magic 8-balls.” These are unpredictable times to be sure, so in Boy Scout style, we must be prepared.
If you are interested in learning more about our state’s budget, there’s a conference on Friday that is sure to be worthwhile. The Colorado Fiscal Policy Institute is putting it on, and it’s open to anyone who registers. Click here for more information and to register.
