Sen. Shaffer – I was hoping you could answer a question that was left unaswered during the iChat on Channel 2.
My question was: What would have happened to SB 281 had you not voted against it during the April 27th vote. I believe, had you voted for the bill you sponsored the final vote would have been 17 – 15 , but you voting against it made the vote 16 – 16.
It is my understanding that this bill have been revisited and reviewed various times, so much so that it had to be sent back to the senate. What would be the need for it to be sent to a conference committee and for you to vote against a bill you are so passionate about?

Thanks for participating in the live chat on Channel 2 last night.
Passing a bill on third reading in the Senate requires at least 18 favorable votes. Because I do feel passionately about the bill’s passage, I want it to go to conference committee so we can work out yet another compromise that will hopefully get us to 18 votes. In order to bring the bill up for reconsideration, I needed to vote on the prevailing side, which in this case was in opposition to the bill. I only voted against the bill this time so that I would have the ability to move for reconsideration, not because I want the bill to fail.
